Who is actually responsible for planning a tour?

As a production manager, you play a crucial role in ensuring smooth and high-quality production processes. You are responsible for ensuring that small or large events, tours or musical performances are realized in a technically and organizationally flawless way. Your responsibilities as a production manager are extremely diverse and demanding. You take care of the coordination and handling of production processes, whether on tour, in a musical or at a major event. You make sure that all elements, from stage technology to lighting and equipment, are perfectly coordinated. During production, you work closely with artists, performers, technicians and other departments to ensure that everything runs smoothly, and that the final product meets the highest quality standards.

Production managers often work freelance but can also hold permanent positions with production companies or musicals. This is the right field for you if you enjoy organizing events and always have an overview of all the trades - because the final results come together in your hands. The job also thrives on your flexibility, which gives you a clear head in hectic moments, as well as a preference for communicating with various actors and service providers. You should have an initial technical understanding of audio, lighting and stage technology so that you can commission and instruct the various trades accordingly.

There are several routes to becoming a production manager. A formal education in event management, theatre production or a related discipline can provide a solid foundation. Alternatively, you can consider studying in areas such as event management or media technology. Practical experience is invaluable and can be gained through internships or freelance work.
